A word on the Writer's Strike...

Today's rant: The Writer's Strike.
I don't know about you but I am getting pretty fed up with television. There are more channels on TV to watch than ever before and yet there are less decent programs to watch than ever before. Month in and month out I pay for Dish Network, only to receive...well...not a heck of a lot. That's a whole other subject...don't let me get off track. Now there is a writer's strike, which brings back lots of memories of a Baseball strike years back...not that I like Baseball but they have something in common; FANS. TV has fans...fans of certain programs or even channels. I used to subscribe to HBO & Showtime because I liked their programs, even though the movies they were showing were sub-standard and repeated (over and over)....but you could watch without suffering through commercials. Over time, even some of the paid channel's programs began going downhill. Some of my favorites ended (a little too soon for my liking, like Deadwood) and were replaced by uninteresting shows like John In Cincinnati. Bad writing (and some bad acting too). One by one, my fave shows were disappearing, hence I have now canceled HBO. If it wasn't for Dexter, I'd cancel Showtime too. In fact, I'm still considering it. I can always rent the DVD's later. Why not cancel the entire Satellite service as well?? What the heck am I paying for??

What indeed? Think about it...most of the shows now go to DVD and I can catch them up via Netflix when they are released. Much cheaper per month than the satellite service. Even my local news stations are mostly fluff these days. You can't get any REAL news anymore...but I can always get news via the newspaper or even online now. The writer's strike is now impacting my television experience even more. Stations are piling on the horrendous reality shows because no one's writing scripts. Most shows that are starting this month, only have a few episodes completed...then we have to wait for the strike to be over, scripts to be written, shows to be produced...hmm....maybe we'll see something new in 2009?

I might have some sympathy for these writers, if only they did some decent writing! And besides, most people out there are slaving away at minimum wage and don't even have the opportunity to strike for more money. So, once again it's the fans that get caught in between. I wonder how fast the strike would end if people started to cancel their cable & satellite services? If people just STOPPED watching TV...if only for a week. After all, if they can stick it to the fans why can't the fans return the favor?

So Writers, I leave you with this pic of my beloved Jazzpurr. I think he says it all. And I ditto his message.

Yes so right - and since I did not want to be a slave to the TV program I disconnected myself from radio and TV (but obviously not the internet). I own the series I like on DVD and can watch what and when I like.
But the writers strike will delay the when I can watch if it continues on!!
So in a way I am still a slave.....

I myself have been disconnected from radio for years. Frankly, I don't care for commercials, which is another reason I record shows on TV now and skip through the commercials..or I wait for them to come on DVD and get them through Netflix. It's amazing how one can discover their creativity, once they break away from the ties of the media.

Not only is TV dreadful, but at least here the cable company has you in their clutches! Remember when all you had to buy was a TV and an antenna?? Now it's however much a month to "subscribe" to the nonsense! It's ridiculous. I'm in a house with three boys so I don't have much chance of my preferred solution, which is to cancel the d*mn cable.
